I am not sure if it is an coinicidence or not, that my buddy started to post pictures of me falling for digital. But indeed, it has happened. It seems undeniable that karma flows around. One thinks about something while other does it. Everything is connected. Anyway, I think that something big is happening. Instead of just hearing and seeing it I am beginning to feel it. Visual meida is going through a revolution and photography is one of the biggest areas what is jumping forward faster than anything else. I’ve been a lover and a hugger of traditional film, call it whatever you want, even a filmgay but it is what it is. I’ve understoodd that I was afraid, I was trapped in my own world of fixed visual aesthetics what film provided. Afraid and unable to see whats actually out there. The thing is that I have cursed digital photgraphy for long time. Mainly about its lack of capabilities to be a good enough performer for recording visual data. It has always been too raw, too flat….fake! Film has always done it different, never been trying to reflect the raw reality but its own kind of view from it, a romantic view. But it got it’s gotchas, thats a only area it is good at. It’s like a poem, not a book, nor a movie but a poem.
But now digital has had its time and I feel its matured to break into masses, maybe even kill film. I hate that kind of thinking, my logic refuses to accept that fact but my guts tell me different. We all use automobiles, although we still have horses or steam engined locomotives, noone is using them, they are sitting in the museums :/
Of course this all takes time, but eventually it will happen. Since at one day digital will and actually will allow do what film did and that much faster and more convinient way. It already allows that but not so conviniently. The thing is that digital could be considered as a rebirth of a photography since it tries to see photography from a new angle. It looks to the outside world with eyes of honesty instead of romance. Emotion, romance, horror, thrill or tragedy is left to the artist. Once you nail exposure and got your latitude, you are open to do with your file whatever you want. Emulate film if you want or go crazy in photoshop…or just stay honest.
What this all has to do with me? I am excited, “excited and thrilled to the bone”! Since I feel that possibilities before me are endless, I could go to left or right or straight….actually do whatever I want. With film I could only go straight.
